Discovering Ethernet devices

Ethernet ports

The Ethernet communications port dialog functions slightly differently than the serial port dialog does. In most cases, it will not be necessary to specify a serial number, IP address, or other information about attached devices. Users can use the Ethernet Global Discovery process to detect all attached devices.

Ethernet Global Discovery

To perform this operation, make sure the Serial Number field displays 0 (Global), which is the default setting. Then click on the Add Device button, and Supervisor 9 (Svr9) will attempt to automatically discover and attach all Anacom devices which are connected to the Ethernet interfaces. Alternately, you can click the ReScan button, which will also perform a global search for devices.

Selective Discovery

In some cases (especially with several attached devices), Svr9 may not discover all the devices automatically. In this case, the user can use Selective Discovery (also called Forced Discovery) to detect a device using its serial number. The process for discovering a device by serial number is:

1. Type in the serial number of the desired ODU device in the Serial Number field.

2. Click on Add Device(s) button.

Supervisor 9 will then proceed to detect and register the device normally (as shown in the image below).

To select additional devices on the same Ethernet interface, repeat step 2 above. All devices which are discovered by any of these methods will be remembered, and loaded automatically when the program is restarted (only if Auto Connect is selected).

S/N List

Another method for adding Ethernet devices is to click the S/N List button; this will open a separate dialog which will allow the user to type in ODU serial numbers, or read the list of numbers from a text file. This list must consist of one serial number per line, as shown in the example below. This list can also be copied-and-pasted from some other source such as an email message.

Once you have all your device serial numbers listed, select Send2ODU to have Svr9 discover the listed devices.

Let Supervisor 9 remember your devices

In any case, once Svr9 has discovered all your attached devices, remember to select the Auto Conn (auto-connect) option on the Ethernet CommPort dialog. That way, when the program is later restarted, it will remember who to search for.
